The Icelandic music scene is vibrant and innovative, exciting and new. Internationally well known Icelandic Musical Artists are among others:
The Sugarcubes with singer Björk on board. One of their most famous songs is Birthday;
Björk Guðmundsdóttir who has many international best sellers such as Human behavior;
Emiliana Torrini her songs are very lyrical and one in particular went all over the world with the Inspired by Iceland campaign: Jungle drum. Múm, Gus Gus and Mugison are other well known bands and new ones include: Of Monsters and Men
And not to forget Sigur ros with their memorable tunes such as Glósóli
If you like classical music, then Iceland can offer a great variety. The Iceland Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1950 and has established itself as a world-class and quality symphony. The musicians are world-class and devoted to their work.
If you like Opera then there is the Icelandic Opera which performs in Reykjavik and produces about two shows a year.
Jazz options and bands are quite a few but the best known from Iceland is probably Mezzoforte.
Music festivals
Iceland has many annual music festivals. The most recognized festival is Iceland Airwaves which started out in 1999 in an airplane hangar in Reykjavík. The festival showcases the Icelandic rock/pop/electro music scene along with numerous international acts. The festival takes place in October each year and is very popular as tickets are typically sold out weeks before it’s commencement. Among other festivals are I Never Went South, classical music festival Dark Music Days, hard rock festival Eistnaflug, Reykjavík Blues Festival, Reykjavík Jazz Festival and many more.
