Cool Stuff (Daytime)

Iceland is ‘cool’! Absolutely – it’s true.

About 11-12% of Iceland is covered in ice, making Iceland a cool place indeed. Vatnajökull Glacier is the biggest glacier mass in Europe.  The ice cap covers a highland plateau and has numerous broad and narrow sub glacial valleys.  However, in such a cool place – there are several volcanoes, among them the newest eruption in May 2011, in Grímsvötn. Other notorious volcanoes in Vatnajökull glacier notorious volcanoes such as Kverkfjöll.

Vatnajökull is a great source of enjoyment for Icelanders if only for its sheer beauty but not to forget the amount of fun to be had while enjoying the glacier, such as snowmobiling, super jeep extreme fun, hiking and the the product of Vatnajökull, Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon.

Another cool place, yet so very hot is Mýrdalsjökull which keeps the infamous Katla volcano beneath the ice cap. It is the fourth largest glacier in Iceland.  Katla volcano is a caldera and is an active but ‘overdue’ volcano,  so Icelanders wait for an eruption from that volcano.

There are more cool places in Iceland to visit, such as Langjökull glacier, where people generally go on super jeeps for adventure and fun, ride a snow mobile or hike.

Last, but by no means least, in this information about cool glaciers, is Eyjafjallajökull – now known world-wide for eruptions and flight disruptions in 2010.

I visited Iceland a year ago, and what I felt dlduefarly missing was a connection to Icelanders. Sure, I shopped and drank beer on Laugevegur and rented a car to drive in the countryside; but, when I got home, I realized that I didn’t meet very many native Icelanders. I’m coming back in 2012 or 2013, and I plan to shun the touristy places and find the authentic Icelandic restaurants, pubs, etc. (if there are any). You have a BEAUTIFUL country with LOVELY people!
